Heritage

Our humble beginnings…

Charlie Sharpe started Sharpe Solar Systems in Bakersfield California in 1976, the year his son Jeff graduated high school.

Sharpe Solar designed, fabricated and installed their signature “Magic-Box” bread-box solar water heater (cold water in, wahlaa, hot water out) in addition to thermal pool covers, high-efficiency woodstoves, shading and oil-field monitoring systems in that era of Jimmy Carter tax-credits. The business was sold to new owners in 1981 and became one of California’s longest-running solar businesses.

Jeff earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Physics at the At University of California, Santa Barbara where he and his project teams worked with a variety of solar collection systems including the Zomeworks passive solar-tracker.

At UCSB Jeff and his team developed a novel insulated (surf-board foam) Magic-box water heater that closed itself at night on the Engineering Department’s roof.

Jeff’s folks Charlie and Carol served on the Board of Directors for several of Jeff’s businesses over the years, including the school-focused energy modeling and EPCM firm Sharpe Energy Solutions he began in Ashland in 2007.

SES continues to provide services to schools and Tribes as well as design, testing and project assistance for its sister business Stracker Solar which Jeff and his team incorporated in 2017.

Since its incorporation, Stracker Solar has been pleased to provide local jobs and fabrication services for a cohort of enthusiastic and talented employees and owners, and is honored to have developed the country’s premier elevated tracking system.

Stracker Solar continue the pursuit of sustainable energy systems with the same integrity, innovative mindset and care that have been a hallmark of the Sharpe Energy businesses since the 70s.
